Poker Basics

Under the Gun (UTG)

The first player to act preflop, sitting immediately to the left of the big blind. Under the gun is the most challenging position because you must act with no information about other players' intentions. UTG ranges are typically the tightest at the table, consisting mainly of premium hands.

Example

UTG at a 9-player table, you pick up A♠A♥. You raise 3x the big blind — even with 8 players behind you, pocket aces play well from any position.
